Let’s begin by thinking of the story arcs and behaviour patterns that commonly show up in movies, books—and all around us in everyday life: we resist change until something happens that we can’t ignore. We trust too much, get betrayed and learn discernment. We succumb to despair and find hope at rock bottom. These life stories ad patterns are represented by “archetypes”—a role or “character” with specific personality traits that lives through—and learns from—their situations. And these archetypes and their stories can help us understand our own journey to find love, community, meaning and purpose. For us, an archetype can be the ‘role’ we take on—often without realizing—during these universal experiences. Common examples include the Hero/ine, the Warrior, the Ruler (King or Queen), the Martyr—and the Fool and/or Trickster. Exploring archetypes helps us put our lives in context: “Oh, I’m here in this universal life journey!” or “Maybe I need more of this quality to move forwards,” or “So that’s where I’m sabotaging myself!” Where My Interest in the “Fool” Archetype Comes From When I first discovered the “Fool” archetype, it was during an 18 month period of travelling regularly back and forth to England from Canada. I was extremely stressed, living on my own (my husband was living in England dealing with a family issue) and I was trying to stay on top of 3 businesses, an elderly cat and our rural 5 acre property. I was overwhelmed and exhausted, and it was my dog at the time, Dexter (the biggest fool ever), that cheered me up, shook me out of myself and got me thinking about different ways I could feel and experience my life. About The “Fool” Archetype We’re pretty obsessed with the Hero/ine archetype in modern culture (think Marvel movies!). We want to see the hero succeed and overcome evil. The Fool sadly, is often portrayed negatively. And yes, the Fool can be foolish. We’ve all known people who won’t take life seriously and turn everything into joke. Then there are deceitful tricksters like the Joker in Batman or the naive fool who gets devoured first in horror movies! But when fully developed within us, the Fool archetype is wise. In fact the “Wise Fool” is one of the most spiritually advanced archetypes out there. Think Yoda in Star Wars or Buddhism’s “beginners mind”—where being open and playful is considered the height of wisdom. At the higher levels of the “Fool” archetype, we learn to enjoy life—despite its challenges and difficulties. We see the truth clearly and are not threatened by—or afraid to speak of it. About the Wise Fool Archetype The “Wise Fool” is often seen in fairytales as the “Court Jester” alongside the King or Ruler. In these stories, the Fool’s job was to deflate the Ruler’s ego—to say (in jest) what needed to be said, but what no-one else was willing or able to say out loud. The Wise Fool helps us live more from the heart, representing lightness and spontaneity, faith in the process of life, inner strength—and delivers important truths through humour. When Wise, the Fool Archetype is: Protected—with a special role above the politicking and machinations of ‘court’ Clever and wise—has an ability to see through layers of distraction, hypocrisy and self-serving behaviours Speaks the truth and challenges authority—yet softens the blow with humour. Resilient—doesn’t worry what other people think, laughs at life’s difficulties, and gets back up—again and again—after being knocked down. And right now, our world needs more “Wise Fools”! In current culture this would be our political satirists and comedians like Sarah Silverman, Amber Ruffin, Jon Stewart, Melissa McCarthy. Think of Saturday Night Live or Spitting Image and The Baroness Von Sketch Show. But it could also be you. Each of us can learn from the Wise Fool archetype, utilising their skills and inner strength to improve both our lives and the lives of those around us. 7 Strengths of the “Wise Fool” Archetype A lack of concern about what other people think of them. Trusting the process—enjoying the journey and letting things be rather than trying to control them. Living in the present moment—because that’s all there is. Seeing the lighter side of darker situations (when needed). They poke fun at unnecessary rules and inflated self-importance (their own and others). They create their own rules. No matter what, they have a zest for life! What The “Wise Fool” Archetype Can Do For You Modern life is stressful and wearing—the constant pressure to perform, to stay positive when the world feels heavy. Add in climate change, political division, school shootings, war and it’s easy to feel depressed, anxious and powerless. Personally, the “Wise Fool” archetype can help you break through self-limiting barriers, be more resilient and enjoy life more. It’s not about being silly or irresponsible—it’s about reclaiming your freedom, authenticity and joy in a world that desperately needs people who can see clearly, speak honestly and still find reasons to laugh. 10 Awesome Ways to Use The “Wise Fool” Archetype to Be Happier!
