Because we’re all on a journey—the journey of our life. And it’s a heroic journey that takes us through ups, downs, trials and challenges as well as successes and achievements.

These days, we are aware of so much going on around the world. And it seems our world is changing—sadly not for the better. With so many difficult and unsettling events (both close to home and in the wider world), we all have concerns and griefs that go way beyond our (relatively) small lives.

How do we process all this information? Manage our busy lives?

We simply need to listen deeply—to ourselves…

So below are 7 powerful nature-themed quotes to inspire you, followed by 10 beautiful summer journaling prompts to help you listen deeply to yourself—and identify what you need in life right now.

And why not go deeper by taking your journaling outside?

The summer (or long holidays if you’re in the southern hemisphere) is a great time to take your journaling outside—into the peace and additional wisdom of nature!

Journaling is a powerful tool

Self-connection is a key part of the Fierce Kindness philosophy and practice, one of 4 threads (the “4 Cs”) that enable us to create a fulfilling and meaningful life.

And one tool I use to help me get through challenges and difficult times is my journal. I use it to connect to myself and pay attention to my own wisdom—and it has literally changed my life. I’ve got to know myself deeply, learned to trust myself more, acknowledged my deepest longings and had my best ideas. I’ve taken stock of my life, identified what matters most, made decisions and come to some deeply personal conclusions.

STEP 1) If you can, get out in nature

  • Go for a hike, sit on a beach, by a pond or lake or simply in your yard, under a tree or in an urban park.
  • If getting outside in ‘nature’ isn’t an option, ponder these quotes over a quiet cup of tea or coffee, somewhere cosy or with an inspiring view.

STEP 2) Review these 7 gorgeous nature quotes

  1. “Look at a tree, a plant. How still they are, how deeply rooted in being. Allow nature to teach you stillness.” Eckhart Tolle
  2. “Look deep into nature and you will understand everything better.” Albert Einstein
  3. “Nature is not a place to visit, it is home.” Gary Snyder
  4. “To me, the first step to conscious awareness is understanding how nature intended things to be. It means being aware of our bodies and surroundings and being able to respect the essence of things without needing them to be different—and this includes ourselves. We must understand the magnificence on how the universe intended us to be without needing to change.” Anita Moorjani
  5. “When I pray, I always thank Mother Nature for all the beauty in the world. It’s about having an attitude of gratitude.” Miranda Kerr
  6. “The human soul doesn’t want to be fixed, it simply wants to be seen and heard. The soul is like a wild animal—tough, resilient and shy. When we go crashing through the woods shouting for it to come out so we can help it, the soul will stay in hiding. But if we are willing to sit quietly and wait for a while, the soul may show itself.” Parker J. Palmer
  7. “Life, life, life! Think of the power that’s in the universe! Moving the earth, growing the trees! And that’s the same power within you. If you’d only have courage and the will to use it!” Charlie Chaplin as Calvero in the movie “Limelight” (1952)

STEP 3) Now consider the 10 summer journaling prompts below for some “deep inner listening”

Ponder your answers or for best results, write in your journal.

  1. Start by contemplating your life over the last few months.
    1. What has been the ‘tone’, texture or energy of your life experience?
    2. What is MISSING? What would you like to be DIFFERENT?
    3. What are you NOT acknowledging in your life that needs to be brought into the light?
  2. Next review the nature quotes, then answer:

    1. What pearls of WISDOM, INSPIRATION or YEARNINGS do these quotes spark for you?
    2. Which nature quote most RESONATES with you? Why is that?
  3. Write out the nature quotes that speak to you and ponder these questions:
    1. WHY do you think you were drawn to these quotes?
    2. WHAT do you think the quote is saying to YOU specifically?
    3. What are some IDEAS you’ve been having, of changes you could make in your life—however small?
  4. You have a deep inner wisdom that recognizes truth and what needs to change.
    1. What MESSAGE from this exercise do you most need to heed (pay attention to)?
    2. What ACTION do you need to take?

Go Deeper Still

Finally, to go even deeper still, choose one quote, write it out and put it somewhere you’ll see it often. Then over the next month, make an effort to notice it—and each time you do, ask:

    • What is this quote teaching me or reminding me of today/now?
