What Makes Your Heart Sing? (with Coaching Exercise)

Happy Woman for What Makes Your Heart Sing Exercise Article with PDF

Over the last several weeks together, we’ve been pondering life “under COVID” and reflecting on what it means for us and the world. And we’ve also begun the process of considering how life could be different.

This physical isolation, while challenging and difficult, has given many of us an unprecedented time to think and reflect. Used wisely, we can re-design our lives – to align with our values (what matters most to us in life), and make different (better, happier-making) choices going forwards.

Here are some of the areas we’ve looked at so far:

But do you know what makes your Heart Sing?

As regulations slowly begin to loosen, and before we start to think about new life choices, I remembered a beautiful coaching exercise.

In fact it’s possibly my Favourite Coaching Exercise…

“What Makes My Heart Sing? is one of my absolute favourite coaching exercises.

It’s an incredible tool for awakening and finding joy, boosting energy from within, helping with life balance and taking care of our selves as well as ‘mining’ for values.

And it’s incredibly simple – and powerful.

How to Complete this Exercise:

This inquiry helps you get in touch with what truly gives you joy in life. Take a moment to imagine you’re blissfully happy and feeling true joy – free and light of all cares and worry. You can’t help but smile, and you feel relaxed and at peace with yourself and the world. You may even feel a glow from within and a spaciousness in your heart.

Instructions:

  1. Start by reading the notes and examples on the worksheet.
  2. Then write out the Top 10 Things That Make Your Heart Sing!
  3. When you’re finished, notice how you feel as you look at your list.
  4. Ask, “What do I notice about my list what do they have in common?”
TIP: After you’ve given this question some thought, see the other Tab “Read AFTER Completing the Exercise” for one powerful answer!
  5. Finally, be sure to identify ONE action you will take in the next week to bring more of these joyful ‘heart sing’ items into your life. This should be something you can easily achieve and commit to – and remember to include a date by when you will complete this action.

Note: You can return to your list at any time to add new items.

So, here are 3 final questions for you:

This powerful exercise helps you find more happiness – where you are.

1) Did you notice that most (all?) of the items on your list are free and/or easy to do?

If you didn’t notice (and most people don’t!), perhaps take a moment to go back and review your list…

2) If the things that make our HEART sing are mostly free and/or easy to do, why don’t we do them more often?

This is a deep question to reflect on. And the final question for you to ponder is:

3) Finally, how could you bring more of these things that make your HEART sing into your daily life?

The things you identify on your “Heart Sing” list are things to make time for. They boost your joy, uplift your heart AND are good for the soul.

And know that you can also use your list for ideas whenever you need inspiration or more joy in your life.

Remember the 3 important connections we need to be happy in life:

  1. Connection to ourselves: These “Heart Sing” items make your heart sing because they deeply connect YOU to YOU!
  2. Connection to others: Quality time with people who matter to us uplifts our spirit, and make our hearts sing.
  3. Connection to something bigger than ourselves: Sometimes what makes our heart sing, is the realisation that we’re just a small part of something much, much bigger…

I believe happy people make a difference in the world. Sometimes simply by being their happy selves, and sometimes because happy people feel more inspired to help others.

So, what makes YOUR heart sing? Now go do it!

“Change the world, start with you!”
